Situated in Maputaland, the north-eastern region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, adjoining the Mozambique border, Tembe is home to the province's biggest African Elephant herd and its only indigenous Elephants. At 300 square kilometres in extent (190 square miles), Tembe is the third largest game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, home not only to the unique Elephant population but also to a profusion of wildlife, including four of the Big Five.
Tembe Elephant Lodge is located 200km (124.2 miles) away from Richards Bay Airport, 400km (248.5 miles) from King Shaka International Airport, and approximately 600km (372.8 miles) from the Johannesburg International Airport.
When driving to Tembe Elephant National Park you turn off the N2 to Jozini, go through the town and cross the dam wall. The park is 72km (44.7 miles) from Jozini and is well signposted. You will be met at the entrance gate and directed to the secure parking area where you can safely leave your vehicle for the duration of your stay. From there, you will be driven in a 4x4 vehicle to the lodge. A 4x4 vehicle is essential if you wish to enter the park.
Directions from King Shaka International Airport
Travel north on th N2, take the Hluhluwe turnoff and drive through the town, turning left at the T-junction. After 1km, turn right over the railway line, onto the R22 towards Mbazwana and Sodwana Bay (but please do not turn off to Sodwana Bay). Stay on the R22 for approximately 145kms, passing through three traffic circles at Mbazwana and following the road up to the top T-junction (it is a traffic circle). Here turn left. It is only another 15kms to the Tembe gate.
